MileHigh Adjusters Houston

From the first call to the final claim, here’s what working a catastrophe deployment really looks like.

Catastrophe (CAT) adjusters are the frontline responders when severe weather or disasters strike. The work is fast-paced, demanding, and unlike any 9-to-5 job you’ve ever had—but it can also be incredibly rewarding.

If you’ve ever wondered what a typical day looks like during deployment, this breakdown will give you a realistic, behind-the-scenes view.

5:30 AM — Early Start, Plan the Day

Most CAT adjusters start early. Before the sun is fully up, you’re:

  • Reviewing your claims for the day
  • Mapping inspection routes
  • Charging devices and making sure all field tools are ready (ladder, camera, tablet, measuring tools)

Time management is key. You might have 5–7 inspections scheduled in different areas, and weather, traffic, or access issues can throw things off quickly.

7:00 AM to 5:00 PM — Field Inspections

This is the core of your day. You’re:

  • Driving from location to location
  • Climbing roofs, walking properties, taking measurements
  • Capturing hundreds of photos per claim
  • Interviewing policyholders and documenting damages thoroughly

It’s physical work, often in hot or storm-impacted environments. You’ll need a strong attention to detail and a cool head under pressure.

6:00 PM to Late — File Claims & Write Reports

After inspections, it’s back to your temporary office, usually a hotel room or mobile setup. Now it’s time to:

  • Upload and label all photos
  • Enter claim data into Xactimate or your firm’s system
  • Write detailed reports that justify your assessments

Some adjusters work late into the night, especially during the first few weeks of deployment when claims are stacking up fast.

Reality Check: It’s Not Glamorous—But It Pays Off

You’ll eat meals in your truck, miss sleep, and battle exhaustion. But for adjusters who are focused, the rewards can be huge:

  • Excellent income potential (especially during active storm seasons)
  • Freedom to choose when and where you work
  • The satisfaction of helping families get back on their feet
